Head Drums
Head Drums are unlike most drums out there. While most drums are plywood, Head Drums are stave shells, vertical solid pieces of wood glued together around a form. The advantages are significant: lighter, since there is much less glue used; greater tone and response, since the sound is now moving WITH the grain of the wood instead of against it, as with plywood shells.
Steve Meyer with Head Drums makes his differently than other stave shell makers. Most of the others that I have seen start with flat staves, glue them then sand them round. Steve has a special process where he is able to produce curved staves, mathematically perfect to the size of the drum. This results in a much better shell, ensures true roundness, and allows him to make a thinner, more resonant shell than many stave shell makers can produce.
I feel like I just moved from a student model violin to a Stradavarius! I truly have hand-crafted instruments and the difference in sound and tone is AMAZING!!!
Have a great and blessed day!
